STEPHEN SMITH
I'm a visual artist based in the inner-city neighbourhood of Surry Hills in Sydney.
My artist journey began with an early passion for painting before embarking on a career in television and film where I've created soundtracks for many of Australia's best known television shows. In recent years I've returned to my first love - painting.I paint landscapes, portraits (and anything else that interests me). I’m drawn to the often overlooked moments of emptiness or disquiet within urban environments and aim to evoke some response or humour through much of my work. I also like to explore at the imbalance, or sometimes tension, between the constructed and natural worlds.
Through my post production studios I’ve been fortunate to collaborate with some of the world’s most talented producers, directors, writers and actors on many award winning productions. These collaborations have helped inform my thinking as an artist. While the mediums are different, my goal remains the same: to connect with my audience on an emotional level, drawing them into a scene that resonates on either the screen or a canvas.
