The Other Side

The rear facades of these Sydney terrace houses form a familiar yet often unobserved urban landscape, where function overtakes presentation. In contrast to the street-facing charm on the other side, the back-lane view reveals a more utilitarian architecture with it’s many boxes of modifications - a rhythm of repetition and variation, almost abstract in its composition. Contemporary needs have expanded these once workers’ cottages into layered family homes. By focusing on what is typically hidden, the work invites reflection on how we inhabit, adapt and ultimately share our living spaces.
