More than just bricks and mortar, urban spaces are the mark of humans adapting the landscape to serve their needs. Over time, some of these spaces transcend their original purpose and become part of the landscape itself; woven into memory, community and identity.
Established in 1916, The Paragon cafe was not only housed in a fine example of Art Deco design, but a living reminder of the Greek cafe culture that shaped so many Australian towns. Loved by generations of Katoomba locals and visitors alike, its stories extend far beyond the walls it occupied.
In my painting, the cafe is once again alive, glowing with a warm and inviting light from the return of life within. Though its reopening remains uncertain, the affection held for The Paragon endures, lingering in the collective hearts of the community it has served for more than a century.
